Referral System

Students may be referred for counseling services through online or paper referral forms. Paper forms are located in the main office for teachers, students, and parents. Links to the online referral forms are located below for parents and teachers.

Students may also request to meet with the school counselor by asking any staff member.

Counselor s Corner
My name is Ms. Larsen and I am your school counselor here at Tijeras Creek Elementary School! I am very excited to begin my second year as part of the Tijeras Creek team. I am here to help provide support services for all students to enhance their academic, social, and emotional growth. 

The goal of the counseling program is to ensure all students develop the knowledge, attitudes and skills that will lead to behaviors that support academic achievement and social-emotional well-being. The counseling program will provide a variety of services through out the school year for students, parents, and families in order to support that growth. These services include:

  • Classroom Guidance Lessons utilizing the Second Step social-emotional learning curriculum
  • Lunch Workshops for students
  • Short-term Individual Counseling
  • Short-term Group Counseling
  • Crisis Intervention
  • Conflict Mediation
  • Positive Behavior Support
  • Community Referrals and Resources
  • Parent Education Workshops
  • Consultation

If a student is referred for counseling, a permission slip for either individual or group counseling will be sent home. Please email me if you have any questions about the counseling services provided at Tijeras Creek. If you would like to refer a student, please use the link on the left hand side of this web page located under Referral System.

VISION STATEMENT:

The School Counseling Program strives to provide opportunities so that every student will acquire the social-emotional, academic, and career skills to reach their fullest educational potential and successfully manage their lives as healthy, responsible, competent and productive citizens who respect themselves and others.

MISSION STATEMENT:

The mission of Capistrano Unified School District School Counselors is to provide a comprehensive counseling program that supports the whole child. School Counselors will focus on the needs, interests, and issues related to social-emotional, academic, and college/career development of all students through a multi-tiered system of support. School Counselors will advocate, collaborate and facilitate actions that promote a positive school climate, provide an opportunity for all students to access their education and achieve personal and academic success to meet the challenges of a rapidly changing world.

Beliefs

The School Counselor Believes ALL Students:

Have the ability to be successful in school and in life when provided with appropriate support and interventions.

Are unique individuals capable of success with their own personal strengths and talents.

Have the right to a safe and nurturing academic environment that supports and enhances their personal growth.

The School Counseling Program:

Is preventative and encompasses academic, social-emotional, and college & career domains to help prepare students for successful futures. 

Is held accountable and evaluated by utilizing data-driven practices.

Is based upon specified goals, input from staff and parents, and developmental student standards.

Is developed in consideration of the special needs and the diverse ethnic, cultural, and racial differences of all students.

The School Counselor:

Is an advocate for ALL students.

Is a resource for ALL students, parents, teachers, and staff members of this school and community.

Will abide by ASCA Ethical Standards for School Counselors to make informed decisions based upon moral principals. 

Confidentiality

Conversations between the student and the counselor are considered confidential. However, there are exceptions to this confidentiality. If a counselor has reason to believe that a student is being abused, neglected or is a danger to himself/herself or others, the counselor has the legal, ethical and professional responsibility to report such concerns to the parents or the appropriate authorities.

Student Success

Second Step Program

The Second Step program is a social-emotional learning curriculum delivered to all students through classroom guidance lessons conducted by the school counselor. Second Step is designed to build a foundation of social-emotional skills such as empathy, emotion management, decision making and problem solving to increase student's success in schools and prepare them to become responsible citizens.
